Founder and Executive Director of Prevention Institute, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving community health and equity through effective primary prevention.
The NMPHA Annual Health Policy Legislative Forum provides a unique opportunity for organizations and individuals working to improve community health to come together, learn, discuss timely issues, and share their legislative proposals for the upcoming legislative session. Organizations are given a chance to make brief statements about their legislative proposals, and a booklet containing summary information about their proposals is distributed widely. Participants can identify allies and possible collaborators, as well as request support from NMPHA and other participating organizations.
Highlights of the 2011 Forum include:
- The morning plenary, entitled “Health Care Reform: Where are we in NM and What Lies Ahead?” featuring Dr. Dan Derksen, Director of the Office of Health Care Reform in the Human Services Department, and Senator Dede Feldman, who chairs the Interim Legislative Health and Human Services Committee.
- The luncheon keynote presentation by Larry Cohen, Founder and Executive Director of Prevention Institute, to address “The Primacy of Prevention and Public Health in the Age of Health Care Reform.”
- Afternoon breakout sessions, to feature workshops on Medicaid Redesign, Health Care Reform and Community-Based Prevention, Critical Health Literacy, Hunger and Food Policy Issues, Effective Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Women’s Health and Policy Challenges, the Regulatory Environment as a Focus for Health Care Advocacy, and the Role of Health Councils in Public Health in NM.
